Being a counselor at Camps Leelanau and Kohahna means being the best. Our staff is composed of the most dedicated, reliable, and compassionate Christian Scientists whose love for children is surpassed only by their love for God. Each counselor acts as a father, mother, friend, and mentor for all of the kids in camp. Their example, more than their words, demonstrates the standard of living the law of Love we expect at the camps.
The day kicks off an hour early for the summer staff. Counselors devote this morning time to the study of the Christian Science Bible Lesson and prayer for the camps, kids, the staff, and themselves. By the time the children rise, each counselor's thought is armed with Truth to face every event of the day.
Each counselor is responsible for instructing a daily activity. We look for staff who are proficient in their activity and who understand how to teach. The camps are committed to an expert staff, and therefore offer financial assistance for counselors seeking training in their activity field.
Of course, the staff is probably most well-known for the ability to do all of these things and make it FUN. A childlike attitude and a sense of humor will do more for kids than any lecture or punishment. Counselors here keep the air light-hearted and full of laughter.
But perhaps the most impressive thing about the staff at Camps Leelanau and Kohahna is their humility. Every counselor is enthusiastic about learning from each camper. The kids have so much to give the staff, and counselors always leave camp with a better understanding of themselves and Christian Science-not to mention countless unforgettable memories of growth, triumph, and just plain fun.
Being a counselor is about being patient, nurturing, creative, steadfast, and fun. The kids invariably respond to the actions of the staff, even if they don't always seem to, and setting a first-rate example is a counselor's first duty. A willingness to interact with the campers on their level is required to establish a meaningful and beneficial relationship. But to be a good friend and counselor also demands holding each other to a high standard, and we don't shy away from the discipline element of love. So if you would like to be a part of one of the most fun, loving, hardworking, spiritually-minded, and downright hilarious teams anywhere, just fill out an application or give us a call. |
