Bugle Call – Week 4 – 2015

What a beautiful first week of the second session it has been! We have been blessed with gorgeous days here on the shores of Lake Michigan, and happy campers with us too! The sense of sisterhood and love is overflowing here and it’s been a joy for campers to reconnect with and/or meet new friends!

On Monday, we took the swim test, spent time doing cabin-bonding activities and played a game of Bombardment in the evening.  As always, the game of Bombardment was a hightlight, and we’re happy to report that the Pine Waukeena’s won their 3 rounds, and the Sand Wildwoods won their two rounds, and the Sky Team won the camper vs. counselor game! On Tuesday, we got into the swing of regular activities at Kohahna. After morning activities, lunch, and rest hour, the girls began their afternoon activities. These included a pond adventure where girls learned about pond ecology, a bike ride down Port Oneida Road, Arts and Crafting, a secret code activity where girls learned secret languages as well as the Russian alphabet, and finally a group mural project with no paint brushes! That evening we put on decade themed Brown Bag Skits, which was hosted by two counselors dressed as cavewomen. That evening, several Wildwood campers went on a Gourmet Overnight where they learned to prepare fine food in the woods in preparation for The Challenge (a competitive camping trip between the two camper teams).

Wednesday was sunny and warm, perfect for cabin day! Cabin day activities included playing at the Glen Arbor playground, shooting the culverts, tubing, going to an art fair, a scavenger hunt, and a beach day. The activities were topped off by a healing testimonial service in the Great House.

As The Challenge draws closer, teams have been getting ready for the departure. Thursday afternoon a Camp Crafts activity was offered for those of the campers interested in going on The Challenge. This “Challenge Prep” was devoted to lashing logs with twine, building structures, and building fires. Other activities included Riflery, some Ceramics, a Pyramid Point Hike, and paddle boarding at the beach. That night we put on a game of soccer, which the Sands won 3-0.

On Friday, activities included metaphysical time and writing Christian Science articles, Horseback Riding, and knitting. That evening we had a blast on the Great House deck playing Newly Weds! Additionally, we played a variation of Hot Seat where girls rotated around a circle and spent a minute of time speaking about a particular topic to another camper.  It was so fun to play these “get to know you” games and the girls got to share special things about themselves and learn about others!

A huge storm rolled in on Saturday, but that didn’t stop our Saturday Inspection! After inspection we headed to the Great House and played games. Afterward, we were privileged to attend a Christian Science talk on “Trusting God” given here at camp by one of our camp Board Members who is a Christian Science practitioner. By the afternoon the clouds cleared and girls practiced outside in the sunshine for Lip Sync. The Lip Sync was hosted by Counselors dressed as robots and aliens and was filled with adorable choreography and thorough lip-syncing. The cabin of Windward won overall with their rendition of “Build me up Buttercup”, complete with perfect costumes and well executed lip syncing!  It was a fun filled day!

As we move forward into our next week we give gratitude for the gifts of God! This beautiful property, beautiful people, and spiritual uplift give us much to be grateful for!

This coming week we will focus on the K-quality of Leadership, and the “Heights of Mind” quality of Integrity.  We’ll check in next week to update you on our journey ascending the Heights of Mind!
