WEEK 2
KaboomKaboom
Ahoy! The mighty Captains of HQ at the Helm for another amazing week navigating the ever-exciting waters of Camp Leelanau!
Again a few excerpts from the Captain’s Log:
The week began with blue skies and bright eyes from the Crew of Campers as we sent the Junior Section off on the Junior Flag Trip Monday afternoon. They ran through the woods, raiding and tackling like veteran Flag Trippers – even the youngest and greenest Seaman Recruits!
All the while a handful of Ensigns and other young officers took to the Seas of Lake Superior, to both hike the Pictured Rocks Coastal Trail and Kayak the parallel waterway. Shiver me timbers, but they had some beautiful weather and seas up there for that trip!
On Tuesday morning the heavens opened up and near drowned those Junior Flag Trippers right out of their tents. They wisely retreated to the Leelanau Lodge for their final morning of the trip. And, Oh Boy, but did we ever have to swab the decks of that building after a morning like that!
By Wednesday the clouds parted once again and all the Cabin Boys engaged in a joyous afternoon of Cabin Day. Each group invaded a different portion of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, from Empire to Glen Haven, Shalda Creek to Glen Lake, we had our sailors and scallywags every place the Blue Bus could take them.
That evening it was “whack-a-mole” during our Wednesday Worship and Testimony Meeting on the hill overlooking Lake Michigan. We couldn’t keep those Seamen Recruits from popping up and praising the good Lord above!
Thursday saw blue skies again and billowing sails across Camp Leelanau
Friday the clouds rolled back in and we battened down the hatches for the North Team and the South Team to face off, once again, on the Lodge Stage for the Comedic War of Attrition. Think of it as a mock naval battle but instead of boats and cannons, its jokes, impersonations, and lip syncs. Wow! Both teams brought their best maneuvers to these exercises – amazing violin, singing, improv, and acting all around!
On Saturday we made port long enough for a few of our two- week campers to disembark. We will miss those young Seamen but know they will return as Leelanau Naval Officers soon enough!
Till next week, as the Irish say, "May the seas lie smooth before you. May a gentle breeze forever fill your sails. May sunshine warm your face, And kindness warm your soul".
