Week 5

Bugle Call

On Sunday, we found out the girls that were going on The Challenge this summer. The Challenge is a four-day competitive camping trip where older Kohahna campers build a home in the woods. This involves sawing and lashing structures including a dining room table, fire table, and a backpack rack. The girls also cook delicious gourmet meals over a fire and play Capture the Flag. Now this trip is a big deal and a big part of getting points for either the Sand or Pine team.

On Monday, the girls going on The Challenge started to prepare for their trip. They spent the day practicing lashing, sawing, and outdoor cooking skills. They also worked on their team shirts, did team-building activities, and started food packing. The rest of the girls not going on The Challenge had a normal schedule with morning and afternoon activities. Their evening activity was Camo Dodgeball! The girls had a blast playing in the woods and playing a game every woman for herself style.

On Tuesday, the Challenge girls had a morning metaphysical, finished their shirts, and finished packing their food and gear. Wednesday is really when the fun began. Not only did The Challenge girls go out on their trip but SURPRISE the oldest girls in the Waukeena section as well as the rest of the Wildwoods are also going on a trip. Soon after they said their farewells to The Chal girls, they started packing up for the Woman of the Wilderness (WOW) Trip. The WOW Trip is essentially a beginner version of The Challenge. The girls go out and learn how to lash and saw, cook in the woods, and build a small structure. These trips left us with the two youngest cabins. They had a blast being the only ones in Camp! Their morning was spent on the boat; tubing and swimming. In the afternoon they painted, bathed, and groomed horses, ending the activity with Beach Period. That evening we got the pleasure of joining the Leelanau boys for church and having an early bedtime.

The WOW Trip got back on Thursday morning, making it back just in time to avoid the thunderstorm. While they spent the morning unpacking and relaxing after their trip, the younger girls had a cozy, rainy morning making forts in the Great House, doing Arts and Crafts, and playing board games.

On Friday, we went cherry-picking as a camp for the afternoon. The girls went to a cherry orchard in Cedar owned by the Kabots and spent the hour picking cherries and having an awesome time. Our evening activity was brown bag skits! We saw lots of….

Saturday was the best day because THE CHALLENGE GIRLS GOT BACK! As they walked up to the deck of the Great House before lunch the girls greeted them with cheers and hugs. While the girls from The Challenge slept, the younger girls hiked Empire Bluff and ended the activity on the beach. When they got back they were ready to ask The Chal girls all about their fun adventures. That evening they got to have a movie night! They voted on and watched the movie Ella Enchanted. Everyone loved the movie and getting to relax!

Sunday afternoon after our sleep-in and church we had an epic Harry Potter-themed Afternoon Activity with Leelanau. Campers got sorted into houses by our sorting lifejacket, pet a unicorn, met famous Harry Potter characters, played some quidditch and so much more! Everyone absolutely loved the activity!

So much happened this week from The Challenge to painting horses! We are so excited to see what the last two weeks of Camp hold for us!
