Week 5
KaBoom,KaBoom,KaBoom,KaBoom,KaBoom!!!!!
Ahoy! The mighty and salty Admirals of the navy known as Camp Leelanau sharing a few more snippets of their log from this voyage known as Summer Camp. (To be read aloud in your best pirate voice.)
The fifth week at sea dawns bright but with an air of anticipation. There is a bit of “Large Scale Exercise” being prepared for – those Camp lads call it the Senior Flag Trip. On Tuesday we took those sailors through their formations for four days of Capture of the Flag in late successional eastern deciduous forests. (Doesn’t sound like one of the seven seas, but it does sound rather lovely in July.)
They build their own galley. Cook all their own meals. Maintain a vigilant watch for the opposing colors. And defend fiercely the waters they’ve claimed for their team. Ahoy, tis a great game for young men to learn about and grow in their appreciation of a higher power!
Additionally, the younger ensigns and recruits did a smaller scale version of this same excursion. We call it the “Backwoodsmen Flag Trip.” All the above components on a truncated timeline. (Remember…pirate voice.)
Toward the end of the week, we had all shipmates back on hand, and after a bit of deck swabbing and a general scrub down they all received some well-deserved R&R on Friday evening and Saturday morning. But, by that very afternoon they were back up and running in a little game we play called Pirates and Cargo! Ahoy! Finally, a camp game that fits our theme so well that no euphemisms are needed. Perhaps some explanation…but nah. It explains itself.
From Pirates and Cargo right into Saturday Night soccer it is clear that this bark we call Camp Leelanau is setting a strong tack for another two weeks of joy, learning, growth, and fun for all of the young sailors that have put to sea this summer!
