Kaboom, Kaboom, Kaboom, Kaboom, Kaboom, Kaboom!!!!!!

The Senior Flag Trip certainly dominated the landscape of Camp Leelanau this week!

20 burly campers, 6 burly counselors, 1 water buffalo, and a cooler full of seafood traveled together into the forest behind Camp for their annual 4-day, 3-night Capture the Flag Competitive Camping Trip.

And a mighty trip it was for everyone.  Low scoring in the Flag count meant strong defense from both teams.  Very close scores on most meals and structures as well.  The North Team embraced their cajun heritage and served shrimp po’ boys, beignets, and fried catfish.  The South Team stuck with a more traditional menu with Mountain Burgers and Steaks for final banquet.  More importantly both teams executed their complicated menus beautifully.

The weather played into the game and experience a good bit as well.  On Wednesday after an inspired testimony meeting in the meadow, just as the game was getting back up and running, the heavens opened up with fierce thunder and lightning which sent both teams off their ridges to safely wait out the storm under their tarps on lower ground.  Again, on Thursday a deluge put the cookfires out on both ridges right at lunch time.  But both teams prevailed in their positive attitudes and competence as they worked to serve their teams and each other throughout this peak experience.

Back at Camp there was no lollygagging.  The Backwoodsmen journeyed out for their own Flag Trip experience, though not as long, they still got to experience some of the joys of a Flag Trip, like food cooked over a fire, building structures, tackling in the woods, and a good rainstorm.  Again, the competence those boys shows gives us all hope for continued excellence on Senior Flag Trips of the future.

Once we had everyone home and together again on Friday we accomplished a few other chores to round out the weekend.  We made presents and thank you notes for all of the support staff.  We did a deep and thorough cleaning of our cabins to get any “Flag Trip Funk” out.  And we played the annual game of Saturday Night Soccer -Campers vs. Counselors.

In case you were wondering, after all this, yes…the counselors won the soccer game.  And the South Team won the Flag Trip.

One more week of good and growth to go!
